We came, we saw, we prayed......

Rev. Faith Fowler, Executive Director of Cass Community Social Services, was the keynote speaker at the Cross Training (formerly Learning Fair) event on Saturday, October 6 at Memorial UMC in Gladstone. United Methodist from as far "south" as New Hope of Emmett County and as far west as White Pine, and all churches in between learned the difference between Ministry to the Poor and Ministry with the Poor.

Faith explained the ministry "to" can destroy the dignity of the one on the receiving end, while "with" enables the ministry to go both ways. Those wishing to minister should always first ask how will it make the recipient feel if the giver does something for the receiver that they could have done themselves? She stressed, "Ask them what they need."

Following Faith's presentation, attendees could choose from three workshops: Faith on Tiny Houses, Conference Treasurer David Dobbs on ministry shares (formerly apportionments) and other financial matters, and Rev. Paul Perez explaining the new mission engagement program and how to become an EngageMI (formerly Spotlight) congregation. Resources from the latter two workshops are available from the district office.

The Cross Training Committee, headed by Rev. Sandy Kolder, thanks Rev. Tim Wright, Laurie Kaufman delaGarza, Lisa Myers, and Kathy _______ of Memorial UMC for the gracious job they did making Memorial UMC available to the event.
